Our new bag is here - finally - and it’s kind of a big change. Who knew bags could be so intense?
Sadly, the manufacturer of our recyclable paper bags has gone under, and this type of bag is no longer available to us. We have spent the past year researching, speaking with other roasters and trying to find a new bag that does as many jobs as we want them to.
After a lot of time spent deep diving into this stuff, we have gone with a bag from Decent Packaging. It’s a larger format bag, which means we can pack it down slim for the post, but with its resealable zipper, it means we can use this for retail too.
Look, this is essentially a plastic bag. It’s made from post-consumer recycled LDPE and covered in a Kraft paper. There’s no way to spin it into something more green, and we’re not going to entertain doing so. Right now it is one of the best bags available to us. We’ve looked at a number of criteria to get to this decision, including the amount of resources needed for it to be recycled, as well as the reality of the ‘compostable’ alternatives - it ain’t so clean cut.
Our search for the ideal packaging never ends, and consumes a lot more of our time than is probably healthy. But it’s important to us, so we’ll carry on looking. As material technology continues to progress (even though it feels painfully slow at times) we will continue to look to options that maintain quality and durability, but also tread as kindly on the planet as possible.
