Q&A with Katie White at Woods Cyclery

Pink hair and frog art.

Katie White - The Woods Cyclery

You’ve probably seen us sharing Katie’s awesome latte art content on Instagram. At this point, our recent hot pink milk jug has kinda felt like a signature model for the badass barista at Woods Cyclery in Lyndhurst, where you can find her whipping up flat whites with seahorses, swans, and of course, frogs in the milk art. We fired a few quick questions to her in between shifts.

So first off, how did you end up at Woods. Do you ride bikes and stuff too?
Starting at The Woods was pretty mad and completely unexpected. I rocked up as a customer after hearing really good things about the coffee and vibe and wanted to see what it was all about. Got an absolute banger of a flat white and just sat and knitted away. I’d been making coffee for just over a year at that point and had started filming pours for the fun of it. Obviously, I wasn’t great but tagged The Woods and got their attention and then got offered a job - the rest is basically history.

I don’t even own a bike but I’ve learnt so much about the cycling community and they’re all a bunch of legends. The shop is an absolute vibe and full of the best people I know.

What’s something about the New Forest most people miss?
The New Forest is such a beautiful place full of history and wonderful walks. A lot of people come to see the animals and villages but I feel like they miss out on really exploring the beautiful views. Growing up here, you take it for granted and you always wish to be in the city but the older I get, the more I appreciate the slower life and exploring the nature that surrounds me and you see something new everyday. I highly encourage people to get a picnic and coffee and get lost in the beauty of it all, even on rainy days.

Last three songs on your Spotify?
Isaac is typing - Soft Play
House Tour - Sabrina Carpenter
Owner of a lonely heart - Yes

Favourite film?
Muppets Christmas Carol, hands down, everyday. I will happily sit and watch that film throughout the year. The songs are banging, the muppets are great and it’s bloody Michael Caine - what’s not to love?!

How are you brewing coffee at home?
My go-to is always my V60, I’m an impatient lil sod so it’s quick and easy to get my caffeine fix. But if we are gonna be real about it, I will happily pop in to work on a day off because I know I’m gonna get a cracking cup of coffee 😮💨😂 ( it’s a 5 minute walk and it’s totally worth it)

Where does the frog thing come from? We love them.
The frog thing came up in 2022. I actually came across the knitted frogs on Instagram and immediately fell in love. I found the pattern and made my first lil guy called Benoit. From there, it went a bit crazy. I’ve made over 50 of them and they’re all over the world now. Customers would send me pics of their frogs in Alaska, Singapore, Australia - the list goes on and it blows my mind. It kind of just became my thing from there. I’m basically a modern day granny who pours sick coffee by day and knits socks by night.

So you must have a frog tattoo in there somewhere right?
I actually have six frog tattoos. My favourite frog tattoo I have was designed by my friend Jessi James. It’s of my other friend Kaye dressed as a clown but in frog form. It’s insanely accurate.

You’re 20 deep on a busy Saturday - we’ve seen the lines of cyclists - what tunes are getting you through?
I’m really big into Soft Play right now, all of their songs are perfect to listen to when smashing out a rush. More than likely, you’ll see me (and hear me!) bobbing along, singing my heart out and getting pumped 😂
